The First Breath Still Moves
S – Scripture
“In the beginning, God created the heaven and the earth. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.“
In Genesis 1: God speaks then creation responds
What stands out to me is the repeated phrase, “And God said…” (vv. 3, 6, 9, 14, 20, 24, 26). Over and over, His word goes out, and creation responds, every molecule dancing, bringing all things into being. That one breath creates the ebb and flow, from the beginning until now. All emanates from that first word.
Later in the chapter, “So God created man in His own image…” (v. 27) reveals our unique place in His creation. God reveals the importance of humanity in the web of life and the sacredness of stewardship.
O – Observation
Genesis 1 shows us the power of God’s word. With nothing more than His voice, everything comes into existence. He speaks, and light appears. He speaks, and waters separate. He speaks, and life fills the earth.
That same pattern repeats: “God said… and it was so… and God saw that it was good.” The rhythm of the chapter is almost like a heartbeat, steady, creative, life-giving.
This chapter also emphasizes that God names things, defines order, and gives humanity a special role. Made in His image, we’re called to stewardship, a sacred responsibility in the web of life.
This brings home to me the importance of breath and words, how the trees, the birds, and all living things grow, reproduce, and live from that one breath. One quiet breath can change everything in a moment.
I often forget, in my day-to-day troubles and toils, the sacredness and importance of life. The quiet beauty of a tree, a flower, a friend.
A – Application
As I walk through my day, whether in nature or simply breathing in and out, I’m reminded that the same breath that brought the universe into being sustains me now.
Genesis 1 challenges me to be careful with my words. My words and thoughts carry weight, for good or for bad. Just as God saw creation and called it good, I want to focus on the goodness around me.
P – Prayer
Heavenly Creator, help me remember to be grateful and careful with my words. Guide me to see Your image in myself and others, so that my life reflects You. Help me be still, listen, and seek peace in silence. Quiet my willful voice, so I can hear Yours more clearly. With every breath, draw me closer to Your light, Your love, Your will. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
